PBI Education at FSPHP 2025

Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) Presentation Spotlight

PBI Education Medical Director Catherine V. Caldicott and Maryland Physician Health Program (MPHP) Clinical Manager Holly Wade will co-present on “Applying a Trauma-Informed Approach to PHP Processes” at the FSPHP 2025 Conference and Annual Membership Meeting.

After explaining the rationale for applying a trauma-informed approach (TIA) to PHP processes, this presentation will describe the MPHP’s efforts and experiences with relevant qualitative case examples. It will provide simple steps that PHPs can take if they have not yet considered integrating a TIA into their processes, plus examples of how to further integrate a TIA for those PHPs that have already begun the process.

Attendees will learn to recognize the link between clinicians’ lived experiences, including trauma, and subsequent lapses in professional conduct, substance use disorders, and/or mental health issues. They will see how taking a TIA to PHP-participant interactions and making referrals to external resources, such as remedial education providers, can improve PHP success in health and well-being outcomes for their clients and improve the safety of the public.
