2024 CLEAR Educational Conference Presentation

Trauma-Informed Regulation

PBI Education Medical Director Catherine V. Caldicott is part of a team presenting at the CLEAR Annual Educational Conference in September in Baltimore, Maryland.

This presentation will describe a trauma-informed approach (TIA) to regulation with registrants from three different perspectives—that of an investigator, a senior regulator, and a remedial education provider physician faculty member. They will share how a TIA can be applied to all aspects of professional regulation—from examinations, competency screening interviews, complaints, investigations, discipline, and fitness to practice proceedings. This approach protects the public by attending to registrants’ lived experiences and histories, and can inform more impactful ways of accomplishing professional rehabilitation and recidivism prevention. Integrating a TIA into regulatory and educational processes can benefit all by avoiding re-traumatization and other adverse mental health outcomes, reducing stigma, and improving opportunities for remediation and return to safe practice.
