Professional Boundaries, Ethics, and Professionalism in Education (TE-24)Back

Because the student-teacher relationship involves a power dynamic where students are vulnerable and teachers must demonstrate trustworthiness, PBI Education offers a course for teachers who have pushed the boundaries or failed in their ethical and professional obligations in some way.
Professional Boundaries, Ethics, and Professionalism in Education offers a two-pronged approach to remediation. First, through readings, research, and writing assignments participants learn to describe their offenses in legal, ethical, and regulatory terms. And second, through one-on-one consultation with the faculty, they identify the factors that led to their offense and develop a Personalized Protection Plan to safeguard students, schools, and their ability to continue in the teaching profession. Learnings are cemented by participation in thirteen hours of the Maintenance and Accountability Seminar.
- Online component: Online assignments and readings
- Individual teleconference component: Individual discussions with course faculty to review assignments and course concepts
- Group teleconference component: Faculty-led group conference calls (TE-MAS). One hour weekly on Tuesday evening (9:15pm - 10:15pm eastern time) for thirteen weeks
- Certificate distributed upon successful completion of course following final discussion with faculty
At a minimum, this course will take participants fourteen weeks to complete. Accelerating this schedule is not permitted. This time frame is pre-determined to facilitate the most comprehensive educational experience and allow enough time for course concepts to be absorbed and implemented.

K-12 teachers, higher education faculty, principals, religious education teachers, ministers, and other professionals working in the educational setting.
This course addresses issues such as:
- Sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, and sexual misconduct
- False, fraudulent, deceptive, or misleading documentation of professional status
- False or malicious statements toward colleagues
- Attempting to obtain a teaching certificate by fraud or misrepresentation
- Using one’s name to cover the actions of another not authorized to teach
- Falsification of student records
- Misleading or deceptive communication with regulatory boards
- Covering or failure to acknowledge previous disciplinary action
- Teaching below minimal standards
- Discrimination based on race, color, creed, sex, national origin, marital status, political or religious beliefs, family, social or cultural background, or sexual orientation
- Acceptance of gifts, favors, or gratuities that impair or appear to influence professional decisions or actions
- Conflicts of Interest
- Dual Relationships that compromise a teacher role

A 16, 20, or 24 contact-hour certificate of completion will be made available to course graduates upon completion of the course, certified by PBI Education. Graduates will be awarded contact hours equal to the number of hours completed during their course.
